This all starts February 17th, so come down and join us. The updates should hit the website within the next couple of days.
Before all of that starts, we have Chinese New Year to celebrate. Join us on Sunday, February 9th at 1pm for our Chinese New Year Celebration. Bring friends and food (potluck style) and we will have a bunch of fun to welcome the Year of the Wood Horse (Jan 31st is the New Year, but hey- let's party anyways). Wear red!
Final note: are you looking to go out on Valentine's and need a place for your kids to hang out? We are watching Kung Fu Panda on the big screen at the school, with snacks, games, and probably some cool kung fu stories. Please sign up as soon as possible. February 14th, 5pm-8pm $30 per child and 15% off for each additional child. Need more time? we can extend it to 9pm for $20 more.
Chinese New Year is almost here - January 31st. As the year changes over, we like to stir things up and get ready to gallop into the Year of the Horse! To celebrate, here are three events that you will want to attend:
January 19th: Kung Fu Movie Night
This time around we are projecting the best movie ever (!), Big Trouble in Little China (PG-13). It has some profanity and tons of bloodless martial arts action, and Kurt Russell looking utterly bewildered as he stumbles into a sorcery filled Chinese kung fu movie. All ages are welcome, as are friends, blankets, and pillows!
When: 6:30pm, Sunday the 19th.Join the event HERE!
January 21st: Chess and Mahjong Night
Let's work out our strategy muscles and play some of the best strategy games ever: Chess and Mahjong. If we are lucky, we might even have someone to teach us Go. Bring your own chess or Mahjong sets if you have them. If you don't know how to play you will learn! All ages welcome.
When: 6:30pm, Tuesday the 21st
Join the event HERE!
February 9th: Lunar New Year Celebration
Let's all gallop into the Year of the Horse together with a fun and culture-filled night. We will have more details to come, but mark your calendars, because we will have some big announcements to make that night! Note: the original date was set for February 2nd but has been updated because the 2nd is Superbowl Sunday!
January is here and with the new year often comes that desire to set new goals. Push-ups are a seemingly universal measure of strength- and besides the obvious benefits to your arms and chest are a great core workout as well. Push (haha) your boundaries by getting to 100 push-ups with us! This is a six week program where you do not have to come into the school or even be a member to participate (though we would love to see you). All you have to do is see how many push-ups you can do straight through, and follow the chart we will post each week.
We can't take the credit for this program- the lovely folks at onehundredpushups.com have developed this, including a free smartphone app. Go show them some love and download their app or visit their site. as one would expect, they have a ton of good info on push-ups.
Does it work? Well, we tested it, and we can say with confidence that it works. Is it easy? Not really. But difficulty is what defines a challenge. And you know what? it's 2014, and you will do 100 push-ups in 6 weeks.
We will post the weekly schedule here and remind you on Facebook (so like us if you haven't) and update us on your progress each push-up day on Facebook so we can cheer you on! It's easier with people sweating alongside you, so come into class and we can all do it together.
Ok, ok, enough talk. Here is week one! Step one is to see how many you can do straight through. 0-5 means you are in column 1, 6-10 means you are in column 2, and above that is column 3. Can you do 50? jump to week 3 on the site or start from the beginning. If day 1 is on a Monday, then day 2 will be Wednesday, and day 3 on Friday, with two days off following. Rest is important, too!
Day 1: 60 second rest between sets.
Chin Na, joint locking techniques, submission holds, pain compliance defense tactics- call them what you will, on Saturday the 14th, we are holding a workshop/seminar on five powerful joint locks that you need to know. Brutally effective for self defense or for controlling a situation before having to resort to blows, both beginners and those expanding their knowledge will find valuable information during this two hour course. For frosting on the cake, we will be teaching some hold escapes as well. Get plenty of hands-on practice
How much: $35 in advance, $50 at the door. Get three friends to sign up, and yours is free! If you are new to our school and decide to join, the class fee will go towards your first month's tuition. Pay online or in person at the school.
Where: Mantis Kung Fu Academy, 6910 Montgomery Blvd. NE (505) 350-1161. Call for further info.
When: Saturday, December 14- 1:00-3:00pm. Kindly show up 15 minutes in advance.
